Sir,
I am directed by the Marquess of Reading to transmit
to you herewith a copy of a despatch from His Majesty's Consul-
General at Shanghai relative to an application which has been
received from Mr. I.A. Levis, a resident of Shanghai, for the
registration at the Consulate-General of the births of his
seven daughters born in Shanghai. The statutory declaration
and the marriage certificate referred to in the despatch are
enclosed in original, and I am to request that you will be good
enough to return them to this Department in due course.
Subject to the point mentioned in the following
2.
paragraph, Lord Reading proposes to authorise registration of
the births provided that His Majesty's Consul-General is satis-
fied that Mr. Levis was born in the Aden Settlement (as distinct
from the Protectorate) or in some other way possesses British
nationality.
3. It will be observed, however, that Mr. Levis was
married in Hong Kong in accordance with Jewish rites, and before
replying to Mr. Consul-General Brenan in the above sense
Lord Reading would be glad to be informed whether the Jewish
ceremony is a form of marriage which is recognised as valid
in Hong Kong.
